In zijn nieuwe boek 'Turkey - What everybody needs to know' verbaast Andrew Finkel zich over het feit dat veel Turken de republiek nog als jong omschrijven. De Turkse republiek werd gesticht in 1923 en is daarmee een stuk ouder dan een heel wat Europese democratieën, inclusief Duitsland en het hele voormalige Oostblok.
Finkel omschrijft Turkije als een adolescent:
'The truth is that Turkey has lost its youthful blush. It is a the very least adolescent. And, like an adolescent, it bristles to be taken seriously. It complains when it is not understood. It criticizes those it once regarded as it elders and betters for having made such a mess of the world. And while it pays lip-service to the counsel of others, it believes that it knows best. At the same time it has the irritating tendency to blame others when things go wrong. It reserves the right to be fractious and rebellious, but at the same time it seeks approval and wants to be patted on the back.'
Andrew Finkel is een senior correspondent, woont er werkt sinds 25 jaar als correspondent in Istanbul. Zijn boek werd uitgegeven bij Oxford University Press.
